Monitoring and assessment

Research and new technologies are used to monitor and track habitats and species of Community interest. This increases knowledge and serves as a basis for decision-making to effectively manage the marine Natura 2000 Network.

During a monitoring campaign to analyse the inventory of habitats in Andalusia, a prototype under development, a vertical camera, was tested. This device has enabled the observation of communities in Almeria that were previously unseen, such as laminaria or well-established coral communities, at depths ranging from 40 to 70 metres. The Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) has developed prototypes for several pilot projects.

The results will be used to design new technologies and adapt existing equipment. Simultaneously, it will offer means for non-intrusive data collection in the surroundings and for comparison with other sources of information.

Effective monitoring systems are necessary to prevent illegal activities in marine protected areas and ensure the conservation of the natural environment. A study has been conducted to compile and present the various needs and priorities for monitoring the Natura 2000 network’s marine life. The results of this study provide information on the monitoring equipment currently available for this purpose.
