The purpose of this initiative is to support the implementation, updating, and development of EU environmental and climate policy and legislation. This is achieved by providing financing for projects that provide added value at the European level.

The European Commission, an EU body, manages the LIFE Programme, delegating the implementation of many components to the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).

The LIFE INTEMARES project is an Integrated Project (IP) under the LIFE Programme. IP projects aim to facilitate the implementation of European environmental and climate legislation by EU Member States. Funds are allocated for plans, programmes, and strategies developed at the regional or national level.

These projects assist Member States in complying with important EU legislation in four areas:

Nature and biodiversity
Quality of life and the circular economy
Adaptation to and mitigation of climate change
Clean energy transition

How do Integrated Projects promote compliance with legislation?

In contrast to other LIFE projects, Member States have the option to use alternative EU funding sources, including agricultural, structural, regional, and research funds, as well as national funds and private sector investments.

Integrated Projects are classified either within the sub-programme for Climate Action or within the sub-programme for Environment. The LIFE IP INTEMARES project belongs to the latter.

Projects within the Environment sub-programme implement large-scale territorial environmental plans or strategies required by specific EU environmental legislation. These plans are developed in accordance with other EU laws or elaborated by Member State authorities. The focus areas include nature, water, waste, and air.

The implementation of such plans or strategies should ensure the involvement of stakeholders and promote the coordination and mobilisation of at least one other relevant source of EU funding, national or private.

The LIFE Programme has financed several integrated projects in Spain, including:
