Its main objective is to prevent the extinction of this bivalve mollusc in the short to medium term by raising public awareness and cooperation, compiling existing information on the remaining populations, and developing active recovery measures.

This includes actions to spread the word about the endemic status of the fan mussel, to protect the species in situ, to relocate some of them to preserve genetic diversity, or to try to save specimens that are resistant to the disease. LIFE Pinnarca is also involved in the search for fan mussels, their reproduction in captivity and the improvement and environmental management of the habitats where they can still be found, such as the Ebro Delta or the Mar Menor in Spain.
