Interreg Med Programme MPA Networks – Seven countries.
2019-2022.
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are one of the most effective tools for conserving marine biodiversity if managed effectively. But more human capacity, skills and financial resources are needed to make Mediterranean MPAs work.
The MPA NETWORKS project aimed to boost this momentum by strengthening networks of Marine Protected Area (MPA) managers at all levels in the Mediterranean, with the aim of enabling MPAs to fulfil their purpose and deliver results that benefit nature and sustain our livelihoods.
Principle Actions:
Design and implement nine pilot projects in seven countries to address the challenges described above.
Share lessons learned and management support tools among the Mediterranean community of MPA managers.
Establish a permanent Mediterranean training programme.
Provide direct peer-to-peer support by organising specific networking activities between MPAs.
Build strong alliances of places facing similar challenges to support national or supranational networks of MPA managers.
Cooperation actions between networks, in the Mediterranean and beyond, in search of synergies.
Joining forces of these networks to create a coordinated voice for MPAs with common recommendations to support policymaking in favour of MPAs at international, Mediterranean and national levels.
