Interreg Med Programme MPA-Engage

Interreg Med Programme MPA-Engage – Siete países mediterráneos.

2019-2022.

Climate change is having a dramatic impact on the Mediterranean Sea. It is warming 20% faster than the global average. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are the first to feel the effects of climate change, despite the nature-based solution they offer to support climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts.

The MPA-Engage project, which involved 15 partners from seven Mediterranean countries (Albania, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Malta, France and Spain), aimed to support eight Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to contribute to adaptation and mitigation of the current impacts of climate change.

Its main achievements were:

  • Development of a protocol for the monitoring of parameters such as temperature conditions or mass mortality.
  • Assessment of the ecological vulnerability of marine protected areas (MPAs).
  • Creation of a participatory approach with key stakeholders
  • Promotion of citizen science.
